One stolen kiss

When Vivian Stratford ruins her reputation by challenging a suitor to a duel, she is packed off to her great uncle's estate until the scandal blows over. On the way, her carriage is stopped by a rakish highwayman. Vivian unsheathes her rapier and duels with the thief. He steals a kiss before disappearing into the night.

Rogue vampire, Rhys Berwyn, robs carriages to help his mortal descendants pay the mortgage on their farm. Sadly, he cannot steal enough to pay off the massive debt owed to the Lord Vampire of Blackpool, and time is running out before his family will be evicted.

Will change her life forever…

When Rhys discovers that the beautiful swordswoman he encountered is none other than Blackpool's niece, he abducts her and holds her for ransom for the money to save the family farm.

While he keeps Vivian tucked away in a seaside cave, Rhys has trouble keeping his promise to leave his delectable hostage untouched.

When you fall in love with the woman you abducted?

Rhys is doing everything he can to keep his mortal descendants on their family's land. He has no choice but to act as a highwayman at night and rob passing carriages. It's not like a vampire can hold down a steady job during the daylight. But the help he has been giving isn't enough when he learns his family is about to be evicted. The answer to his prayers comes in the form of a pretty young woman with considerable fencing skills.

Vivian has been sent to live with her uncle in order to escape a scandal. How dare she challenge a man to a duel, even if she knows she would likely win. Ladies just don't do that sort of thing. So now she's been whisked away to a distant relative. Little does she know that the highwayman she is about to come across will kidnap her for ransom. And she also would never expect to fall in love with a vampire.

I really enjoyed this book. It was two of my favorite subgenres of romance--historical and paranormal--all woven together. We still had our not-exactly-proper lady being weighed down by the rules of society, but we also had an intriguing hero who is sort of a villain too. Despite how it might sound, it wasn't complicated. But it sure was fun.

Vivian impressed me from the first page. She was courageous and feisty. I love a woman with a mind of her own and our heroine certainly had one she wasn't afraid to use. Rhys was a different sort of hero than you would typically find in a historical romance. Yet, he was exactly what I hoped he would be when I read the blurb. He was kind but dangerous. Thoughtful and tempting. There wasn't a thing I didn't like about him.

The spark between the pair was evident from the moment they met. And their chemistry continued to grow with every scene they shared. They actually developed a lot more of an emotional connection than I had anticipated. And the romance was nicely balanced with moments of spice and some that were sweeter. There was an underlying tension throughout the whole book which kept me turning the pages as quickly as I could. In the end, I wasn't disappointed in the least.

In closing...
This author was new to me, but I am definitely interested in reading more of her work. Four stars!
