DRACONES: AWAKENING, book 1 in the Dracones series by Sheri-Lynn Marean, presents an intriguing plotline and complicated fantasy world based on Greek myths. It struggles a bit with predictability and technical issues, though, so I give it 3 stars.
In the novel, Tierney and her family are private investigators who are not native to Earth. They are Dracones, a race descended from dragons that gain their dragon forms at adulthood. Tierney's father, Zander, fled their native Tartaria after their enemy, a group known as the Ilyium, destroyed and massacred their village. Tierney's father cares for the two other orphans from the massacre, Jax and his younger brother, Sami.
On a trip to Olympia, Washington, Zander disappears, and Tierney is determined to find him. Her plans are delayed by Jax going through the painful and dangerous Awakening of his dragon. Combine that with major development of the longstanding, and seemingly unrequited, love interest between Jax and Tierney, and the arrival of some new supernatural beings, and the reader has a complicated tale of treachery to unravel.
Overall, I enjoyed the story. It sat right on the border between a simple, straightforward plotline and an epic, complicated Game of Thrones type plotline. I loved how the Greek mythology was woven throughout and given new life. There was A LOT of backstory, which was helpful, but it was placed in chunks throughout the book. I think perhaps it would have been more helpful if the prologue contained a majority of the backstory in order to minimize the back and forth between present day and the past. Still, it added depth and richness to the story, and as a reader of fantasy novels, I was grateful for the answered questions!
There were some disturbing issues with kidnapping, sexual abuse and assault that would make this appropriate for the over 18 readership, even without the graphic consensual sex scenes. As for those, I wondered at the unnecessary repetition of dialogue – how many "Oh, Baby's" are really necessary to get the point across?
Some of the ending I predicted quite easily, but there was also a twist at the end that I did NOT see coming. So the plot has a little surprise for everyone, I think.
On the technical side, there were many typographical errors which detracted from my enjoyment of the novel; another round of revision would have benefited the story greatly.
As a whole, I think any lover of the fantasy genre will enjoy this novel, and as a lover of dragons, I look forward to finding out what happens in the next book.
